What types of dental prosthetics there are

Losing several teeth changes things nobody anticipates: the way you chew, the way you pronounce certain words, sometimes the contour of your face. A denture restores chewing function and supports the surrounding tissues, and choosing the right type depends on how many teeth are missing, on the condition of the bone and on what you want in the long run.

At Dental Chic in Cluj-Napoca we make both classic removable dentures and solutions anchored on implants. Below you will find the types, the exact prices and the criteria behind the choice, so you know what to expect before your first consultation.

The main difference is between dentures you take out to clean and those that stay anchored in place. Both categories have variants, and the decision follows a clinical and radiological examination, not a preference stated over the phone.

The full denture

Used when all the teeth on an arch are missing. It rests on the gum and on the bone underneath, and its stability depends a great deal on how much bone is left. It is made of acrylic, with acrylic or composite teeth. The version with composite teeth withstands wear better and keeps its appearance longer.

The partial denture

Recommended when natural teeth remain that can serve as support. The Kemeny denture covers small gaps, from one to three teeth, and works as a transitional solution or for limited situations.

The skeletal denture

It has a cast metal framework that distributes chewing forces to the remaining teeth, not only to the gum. It is thinner than an acrylic denture, less noticeable in the mouth and lasts longer. The clasps can be cast or elastic, and the elastic ones are more discreet in the front.

Overdenture, the denture anchored on implants

This is a different category. The denture is anchored on implants, so it no longer rests on the gum and does not move while you eat. It can be detached for cleaning, but it stays firm while worn. It is the solution chosen by patients who have worn a removable denture and cannot get used to its instability.

For implants we use several implant systems: Megagen, Neodent, Nobel Biocare, Bredent and Straumann. The system is chosen according to bone volume, to the area being treated and to the prosthetic plan, not as a brand preference.

How to choose between a removable denture and an implant solution

Three factors weigh the most:

  • The available bone volume. Implants need sufficient bone. When there is not enough, bone grafting can be discussed, which adds time and cost, or a removable solution is chosen.
  • The number of missing teeth and their position. A gap in the front raises different aesthetic requirements than one at the back.
  • What you expect from the result. A removable denture is a solution that works and costs considerably less. Work on implants comes closer to the feel of natural teeth, but involves surgery and a larger investment.

This conversation happens at the consultation, with the radiograph on the table. The treatment plan includes the stages, the estimated intervals and the cost breakdown, so you can decide with all the information in front of you.

What happens after you receive your denture

The first weeks call for adjustment. Speaking and chewing feel different, and that is normal. We recommend softer food at the beginning and a follow-up visit if areas appear that irritate the gum, because they are corrected easily by adjustment.

Over time, the bone under a removable denture resorbs gradually and the denture becomes looser. That is when a relining is done, meaning it is readapted to the new shape of the ridge, without remaking the entire work. Clasp repairs or replacing a tooth in the denture are usually resolved quickly.

For the prosthetic work we carry out we issue a certificate of authenticity, documenting the materials used and the laboratory that produced them.
