What are dental veneers?

fatete dentare Cluj

Dental veneers are used in dental cosmetics, being the most conservative (minimally invasive) solution in correcting unsightly problems of the front teeth.

A veneer is a thin sheet of ceramic or Zirconium oxide made in the laboratory using CAD-CAM System technology, which is applied to the vestibular (external) surface of the tooth by cementing or adhering with photopolymerizable composite, changing the appearance of the tooth by modifying its color, position, shape or length.

Veneering is an alternative to porcelain crowns, where the loss of tooth tissue is greater. The lifespan of ceramic veneers is between 5 and 10 years.

02

Types of dental veneers

The veneering process can be done in two ways:

  • With tooth grinding. The most suitable method where a drastic change in the appearance of the teeth is needed. Tooth preparation consists of removing a 1-2 mm layer of enamel from the external surface of the tooth and from the lateral areas. It is also indicated in cases where we have very voluminous teeth and applying veneers without any tooth preparation will increase their volume even more.
  • No grinding (no-prep) or minimal grinding of the teeth. This method is indicated for thinner teeth and uses 0.5 mm thick veneers. The advantage is the preservation of dental tissue. Given the minimum thickness of a veneer of 1-2 mm, this technique is not at all indicated for teeth of normal volume, where only a change in their color is desired, as it will considerably increase their size and they will appear disproportionate.

Materials used

Veneers can be made of several types of materials:

  • Zirconium Oxide or full-Zirconium. Extremely resistant, the veneers are made only through CAD/CAM computer-aided milling technology. The newest and most recommended technique in terms of hardness, although the transparency of these veneers is not exactly identical to that of natural teeth and often the result is more opaque and implicitly whiter than the rest of the teeth.
  • Pressed ceramic. Veneers made from this type of ceramic are quite resistant and have a translucency much closer to that of natural teeth. They are the most recommended from an aesthetic point of view, but they are usually thicker than other types of veneers, so they require more grinding of the teeth to be covered.
  • Layered ceramics. Feldspathic ceramics are added layer by layer by the technician and the shape can be easily adapted to each patient.
  • Lithium disilicate. Very resistant, the veneers are also made using CAD/CAM technology.

When are dental veneers recommended?

Veneers are frequently used in the following cases:

  • Stained, unevenly colored or dark teeth (due to root canal treatments or tetracycline treatments in childhood, defects in the formation of dental crowns with chalky white demineralization spots, the presence of old, very colored fillings that give an unsightly appearance, or simply due to the consumption of coffee, tea, tobacco).
  • Very worn (blunt) teeth.
  • Chipped or fractured teeth.
  • Crowded or slightly misaligned teeth.
  • Teeth with an atypical shape (with craters on the surface).
  • Teeth with gaps (spaces) or diastema (crookedness).

Advantages of the veneering process

sistem implanturi dentare All-on-4 / All-on-6

Due to the multiple indications of veneers, patients can enjoy the benefits of teeth whitening, orthodontic treatment, and dental crowns, all in one place in a very short time (2-3 sessions).

Dental veneers maintain their color very well over time, as ceramic is highly stain-resistant and non-porous.

Although the technology used and the ceramic materials from which veneers are made make their price quite high, they are considered a good dental investment as they are very durable and contribute to increasing the strength of the covered tooth.

Patients' self-confidence increases considerably after treatment.

06

Disadvantages of dental veneers

The veneering process is not reversible. Once the teeth are covered with veneers, they cannot return to their previous state, they can only be replaced with new ones after a number of years.

As with any dental work, there is a period of adjustment for the patient to the new veneers. At first, there may be difficulties in pronouncing certain consonants such as "v," "f," or "s." The dental veneers can be adjusted later by the dentist where necessary.

Broken or cracked dental veneers cannot be repaired. In the event of a fracture, they must be replaced.

Although it is rare, they can become detached from the tooth surface. To avoid this, bad habits such as biting nails, pens, pencils or other hard objects are totally contraindicated. It is recommended to avoid excessive force on veneered teeth.

Teeth covered with veneers can still be affected by cavities in the uncovered areas, so very rigorous hygiene is required.

07

When is dental veneering not recommended?

Patients who will receive dental veneers must have healthy periodontal tissue and very good dental hygiene. Gum disease can compromise the aesthetic appearance of even the most well-done work.

A very important contraindication is nocturnal or diurnal bruxism and bad habits. Bruxism or "teeth grinding" is an enemy of dental veneers because very high forces are applied to the works and, although the porcelain they are made of is resistant and durable, they can break or even completely peel off the surface of the teeth.

Untreated tooth decay or dental infections (dental abscesses or granulomas) contraindicate cosmetic treatment on the affected teeth. After tooth treatment, the contraindication disappears and veneers can be applied.

Is tooth grinding necessary for veneers?
Veneering can be done with tooth grinding, by removing a 1-2 mm layer of enamel, or without grinding (no-prep) or with minimal grinding, using veneers 0.5 mm thick. The suitable method depends on the volume of the teeth and the desired change.
How long do dental veneers last?
