Description

Tooth decay is one of the most common dental conditions and, unfortunately, one of the most neglected problems that occur in the teeth. Although treating cavities in the early stages is a simple process that does not involve much effort, patients end up asking for help from dentists when the condition causes unbearable pain. Find out why tooth decay occurs, what are the symptoms that signal its occurrence and what are the types of treatment depending on the stage of the condition.

02

How many types of tooth decay are there?

When we do not have adequate oral hygiene, we cannot remove bacterial plaque and we create an environment favorable to the occurrence of dental caries. To avoid this, in addition to a correctly performed oral hygiene at home, dentists recommend following a prevention plan that includes dental prophylaxis twice a year and periodic check-ups every 6 months or according to the recommendation of the dedicated coordinating doctor. These prophylactic measures allow the complete removal of bacterial plaque and tartar.

Types of tooth decay:

  • Cavities on the root of the tooth (occur mainly as a result of gingival recession)
  • Cavities on the lateral surfaces of the tooth
  • Cavities on the contact surface (pits)
  • Occlusal caries (occur on the contact surface of teeth and molars)
  • Interdental cavities
  • Secondary cavities (appear under existing dental fillings)

How are tooth decays treated in adults and children?

Dental cavities are treated by the dentist, depending on the stage they are in. If for a recently appeared cavity a cleaning can be performed followed by the application of special solutions with a protective role, for a cavity that has reached an advanced stage, a deep cleaning and obturation of the cavity with a composite filling or ceramic inlay must be performed. Local anesthesia can be used to perform the fillings if necessary, so that the patient does not feel pain or discomfort. When the tooth has a very large cavity, dental fillings are no longer sufficient and dental crowns are used. First, the affected tissue is removed, then the area is cleaned and sanitized, the cavity is filled with composite, and finally, the dental crown is applied. These treatments are performed on both adults and children.

How do you prevent tooth decay?

The most important thing you need to do is pay close attention to your oral hygiene. Dentists recommend brushing your teeth at least twice a day, morning and evening, and in addition, using mouthwash and dental floss to remove all food debris and bacteria from hard-to-reach areas with a toothbrush.

Also, regular visits to the dentist help us detect cavities in their early stages and treat them before they affect the root of the tooth. To protect ourselves from dental cavities, doctors recommend that we avoid alcohol and tobacco consumption and avoid various dental traumas.
